Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a first-generation Filipino-American. As with many Filipino immigrants during this time, my Dad was enlisted in the Navy and moved around. Went to public school for all 12 years and it’s where I’ve made some of my best friends. I received a B.A. in International Studies and Political Science. Currently, I am attending University and pursuing an M.A. in National Security Studies with a concentration in Homeland Security which I hope to use in the future and eventually become an intelligence analyst for the Government. Additionally, I work full-time as an Information Systems Coordinator.
What are some of your hobbies?
At the risk of sounding like a complete nerd, I really enjoy reading and staying up-to-date on current events: international, national, and local news. I like to debate as well as simply hear what the other side of an argument has to say while also maintaining a sense of respect for other peoples’ opinions on politics, economics, social issues, etc. Realistically, I may not be doing too much to create a significant impact on the world but I’d be remiss if I remained ignorant about what’s going on in the news today…as skewed as some sources may be, but I digress. I’ve played tennis since middle school. It’s been a long-time love (tee-hee) of mine since I was on my high school tennis team and punk ńcontinue to play every now and then as well! I try to go to the shooting range 2-3 times a month. I own a Ruger SR9C name “Ruger Bader Ginsberg” and a Smith & Wesson Model 586 6-inch blued revolver named “Irene Adler.” Naming conventions due to the fact that I’m a low-key feminist. Lol. I also try to go crabbing 3-4 times over the summer season. All I usually need is a powerful headlamp, net, bucket/cooler, and I’m good to go! The past couple of summers haven’t been very bountiful but I’m hopeful for this upcoming one!
What are some current interests you have?
I’m a very hands-on person. I actually like doing things like building furniture, working on my car, figuring out how to fix random things, and will often ask questions for days on end in order to truly understand how something works. I’m also obsessed with technology and electronics – I read articles and watch videos of reviews and teardowns on a lot of the latest tech like smart home devices, smartphones, and just a variety gadgets in general.
I’ve started looking into investments like property, stocks, bonds, etc. I want to maximize on my personal finances and I’ve slowly been looking into how I can capitalize on what I’ve earned thus far. Currently looking into taking up indoor rock-climbing but we’ll see where that takes me. Lol.
What are three fun facts about you?
- I loooove road-trips, no matter the length of the drive! Even though they do end up taking a lot of time (and can even be slightly dangerous at times) I tend to enjoy the journey to get to my destination almost as much as when I arrive! I love driving with the windows down, wind rushing past my hair, and simply having my friends or family in the car with me sing-screaming along to our roadtrip playlists makes it one of the best things ever! If we ever get tired of singing, this usually prompts some engaging conversation which I love just as much, if not – more! I see it as something of an excuse for us to bond in ways that we otherwise wouldn’t be able to. With how busy everyone’s schedules get to be nowadays, this kind of allows us to reconnect with each other, especially with those we haven’t seen in a long time. It’s actually a dream of mine to just pack up and go on a drive through the European countryside with my (future) dog by my side, making stops whenever we want and just taking it all in!
- I am most definitely a kid-at-heart. I love Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Marvel, and Star Wars. I could watch and talk about these movies/TV shows over and over again without getting bored at all. I love the sense of escape one gets upon entering into these different fantasy worlds. HP has always been my favorite, enough for me to get a tattoo dedicated to it!
- I absolutely adore big cities and going to museums. I can willingly spend an entire day in a museum as long I’m left to my own devices; my favorites would definitely have to be the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC and the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. Speaking of, I usually make a trip up to NYC at least 2 times a year to visit family and just explore wherever and whenever I want! Last summer, one of my best friends from college and I made a spontaneous 2-day, 3-city trip one weekend to Baltimore – Philadelphia – NYC. We were exhausted beyond belief but it was one of the most awesome adventures I’d ever been on!
What do you love most about yourself?
Hmm, probably my ability to assert myself. Growing up, I’d always been pretty shy and while that actually didn’t really stop me from making friends, I was not as “gung-ho” about life as I could be. For example, I was pretty “stiff” in the fact that I didn’t really like dancing, singing karaoke, or performing in general as most Filipino kids in my area did. They kind of grew up with that background and I was haphazardly thrown into it myself for a time…which I low-key despised. Despite it all, I don’t think I really grew out of that “shyness shell” until I had hit my undergrad. VMI taught me a lot in terms of being confident, taking charge, and being a follower first before even thinking about leading. The discipline and humbling experiences from my undergrad made me realize that my own self-worth should not be reliant upon anyone else. I’d say that as young adults, we oftentimes think too highly of the opinions that others (strangers, friends, family, or otherwise) have about ourselves that we forget that we should be the ones in control of our own thoughts and emotions. The way I see it, you owe nothing to no one. In the grand scheme of things, how you view and carry yourself is the only validation that one needs.
How would you define your lifestyle right now as a young adult?
I’m very much in a more transitional stage of my life where I’m out of undergrad and working a full-time job, but I’m still trying to find my place in the world as I chase my more long-term goals. I’d say that my lifestyle is somewhat of a semi-organized mess. I’ve got an overall gameplan but as far as how I hope to achieve it, I take that responsibility upon myself with a sprinkling of “live and let God.” On top of researching future vocations, moving forward with my Masters, and working to maintain the relationships that I have with others, I feel as if I am doing both too little and not enough in the grand scheme of things. This part of my life right now feels as if I am so close to achieving some of my wildest dreams but I need to be more patient about it. At this point, I enjoy the freedom of being young and single and the ability to create my own schedule to travel and buy anything I want wherever and whenever I so choose. I realize that my future may not allow for such an opportunity to be available to me again so I am both attempting to live my life to the fullest, whilst also hoping that I come across as a serious candidate upon entering the true “young adult” years from 25 and onward.
What’s your favorite dessert from Filipino Fusion Desserts?
I never pass up on the pastillas and ube cannolis! They’re more than enough to satisfy my sweet-tooth (which rarely makes an appearance) without making me feel as if I’ve been munching on straight-up sugar cubes. Lol.
